The Lenfest Institute for Journalism is a nonprofit organization founded in 2016 by philanthropist H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest to develop and support sustainable solutions for local news in Philadelphia and across the United States. The Institute was created when Lenfest donated his ownership stake in The Philadelphia Inquirer and endowed the organization with an initial $20 million to invest in innovative models for local journalism. Its mission is rooted in the belief that every community needs and deserves a great news organization, especially at a time when local journalism faces severe financial and structural challenges. The Institute focuses on building sustainable business models, strengthening digital transformation, and supporting news organizations in meeting the information needs of diverse communities. It provides grant funding, training programs, research, and strategic advisory services to help publishers develop audience‑centered products, solutions‑oriented reporting, and equitable service to their communities. The Lenfest Institute also operates national Communities of Practice—peer networks that bring together journalism professionals to share best practices, collaborate, and solve common challenges. In Philadelphia, the Institute supports dozens of local news organizations and launched Spotlight PA in 2019 to expand high‑quality investigative and accountability reporting statewide.
