Books in Bloom Celebrates 10 Years of Storytelling, Diversity and Community in Columbia
Families, book lovers, and aspiring storytellers gathered at Color Burst Park last Saturday for the 10th Annual Books in Bloom festival, a vibrant celebration of literature, creativity, and community in the heart of Columbia.
Co-presented by Howard Hughes Communities and Downtown Columbia Partnership with support from Columbia Association, the free family-friendly festival transformed the park into an interactive hub of books, performances, and hands-on experiences for attendees of all ages.
One of the biggest highlights of the day was an appearance by bestselling author Jason Reynolds, whose work has inspired young readers across the country. Festivalgoers also had the opportunity to connect with local authors, hear emerging teen voices during the Generation Verse showcase, and experience spoken word performances from student creatives.
The event emphasized the power of storytelling and self-expression through several interactive attractions, including Creator Labs where participants explored podcasting, vlogging, and illustration. Children and families enjoyed the Reading Garden, which featured face painting, glitter tattoos, crafts, and other hands-on activities designed to encourage literacy and imagination.
Books in Bloom also spotlighted local businesses and community organizations. Guests browsed an outdoor bookstore hosted by Busboys and Poets, participated in a community book swap, and enjoyed food and drinks from local favorites including Cured, 18th & 21st, and GameOn Bar+Arcade.
Adding to the festive atmosphere was the popular Calluna Flower Truck, which brought colorful floral arrangements and photo opportunities to the celebration.
Now in its 10th year, Books in Bloom has continued to grow into one of the region’s signature literary and cultural events, bringing together readers, writers, artists, and families in celebration of diversity, creativity, and community connection.
Festival organizers said the event remains committed to creating spaces where all voices can be heard and where young people, in particular, can see themselves reflected through storytelling and the arts.
