Women’s Leadership Series: Leading with Power and Influence Part 2

“Leading with Power and Influence,” this dynamic session was moderated by Myiesha Robertson, President of the San Francisco Chapter of the National Black MBA Association. With grace and insight, she guided an esteemed panel of powerhouse women leaders: Mindy Field, Senior Vice President & CFO of e.l.f. Beauty; Lillian Samuel, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area; and LaShandra Hunt, Executive Director and Commercial Banker at JPMorgan Chase & Co.

This panel of the women delivered a masterclass in authenticity, leadership, and intentional power. From the moment the conversation began, it was clear this panel wasn’t about theory, it was about lived experience and practical leadership. Each panelist brought forth personal truths, hard-won lessons, and purposeful insights that reminded every woman in the room of her inherent power.

Power Rooted in Purpose

One of the most profound themes that emerged was the connection between purpose and power. LaShandra Hunt shared how her exposure to underrepresented communities, particularly minority suppliers, expanded her understanding of where her influence could drive change. As a result, she now serves on two minority supplier boards to actively support initiatives that align with her values.

She spoke candidly about showing up with purpose even when you’re the only one in the room.

Walking the Walk

Mindy Field reminded attendees that it’s not just about what companies say—it’s about what they do. At e.l.f. Beauty, the numbers speak volumes: 67% of the board is made up of women, and half are from diverse backgrounds. That’s not just representation—it’s intentional design. Even more impressive is the alignment of diversity and business performance. “Our commitment to equity hasn’t hurt our bottom line—it’s made us stronger,” she emphasized. The leadership team at e.l.f. understands that embracing diverse perspectives fuels innovation and long-term success.

Mindy’s leadership style reflects the essence of inclusive leadership: she holds monthly open forums with Black employees, creating a safe space for conversation, connection, and belonging. “It’s the small things that matter,” she noted. “When you show up to listen, to connect, and to help others build, that’s where influence begins.”

Living the Mission

For Lillian Samuel, purpose isn’t just a value, it’s her daily mission. As CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area, she is deeply invested in supporting underserved and at-risk youth. She’s not only creating possibilities for young people, she’s modeling a leadership path built on values, wellness, and spirituality.

Lillian also brought up the power of clarity in the workplace. At her organization, every team member publicly shares their personal values, a practice that fosters deeper alignment, transparency, and shared commitment. “Your bold intent should reflect your values,” she said, encouraging women to be unapologetic about integrating their whole selves into their leadership.

Values as Compass

When Myiesha asked the panel how they live their values while manifesting their purpose, the responses were deeply personal. “Choose your top five values,” she urged the audience. “They are your guideposts.” Whether it's courage, compassion, integrity, or balance, naming your values helps you align with your purpose and identify when environments are either in sync or out of step with who you are.

The conversation also turned toward work environments and the importance of choosing spaces where your values can thrive. “Sometimes coming from nothing gives you the courage to take risks,” one panelist shared. “Don’t be afraid to pivot. You may find your magic in a smaller company that welcomes your ideas and input into the culture.”

The Power of Support

When asked what support looks like in their lives, Lillian opened up about the powerful sisterhoods that sustain her: from the 9 Black women CEOs in her national affiliate network to her book club, family, and long-standing circle of friends. “Mindy says, my village holds me up,” she shared. But she was also honest about the ongoing challenge of balance. “We often over-index on working too hard. I’m still learning the power of saying no.”

Her husband, she shared, is a constant rock of support—helping her stay grounded and reminding her of the importance of setting an example for their children. “I’m living it, working it, and believing in it,” she said with conviction.

Words to the Next Generation

When the panel reflected on advice for future women leaders, the message was clear: lead with intention. Be thoughtful about how you show up, who you support, and how you build. “Trust and listen,” LaShandra offered. “Help others build sustainable relationships. Influence is about being present, not just powerful.”

Call to Action: Build, Move, and Protect the Ladder

The panel closed with a powerful call to action for women in every stage of their journey:

  • Be intentional, this is your life.
  • Know the power of saying no—it protects your yes.
  • Ask yourself: Are you building the ladder, moving the ladder, or standing in the way of someone climbing it?
  • Give yourself permission to be selfish, to rest, to recharge, and to be kind to yourself.

This session was more than a panel. It was a reckoning, a reminder, and a roadmap. In a world where leadership can sometimes feel performative, these women are proof that real power is built on purpose, lived through values, and strengthened in community.

As we move forward in our own paths, may we hold their words close and continue to lift as we climb.
