MMCA Calls for Urgent Investment in Media and Communications Infrastructure; Announces MMCxchange as Scalable Solution for Trusted Distribution

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C. January 22, 2026 — The Multicultural Media & Correspondents Association (MMCA) today underscored the urgent need for a coordinated media and communications infrastructure to meet the demands of the current civic moment. Speaking at the National Press Club, MMCA President David Morgan emphasized that the challenges facing communities, movements, and civil rights leaders cannot be solved by messaging alone.

“Marc Morial recognized early on that this moment will not be won by messaging alone,” Morgan said. “It requires collaboration, coordination, mobilization — and ownership of the media and communications infrastructure needed to make that possible.”

MMCA, a ten‑year‑old nonprofit dedicated to advancing diverse media ownership and sustainability, highlighted the widening gap between trusted messengers and the distribution systems required to reach audiences at scale. Morgan noted that while leaders across policy, litigation, organizing, and civil and human rights are mobilizing on multiple fronts, the media ecosystem they rely on is in crisis.

“This is not a crisis of values or trusted messengers — the polling makes that clear,” Morgan said. “The crisis is distribution. Who controls distribution controls whether your story is heard, how it is framed, who is mobilized, and ultimately who wins or loses.”

Morgan cited the collapse of traditional referral traffic, the rise of disinformation on social platforms, and the credibility challenges facing mass media as core threats to effective communication and mobilization. Despite these challenges, he emphasized that a network of trusted truth‑tellers still exists — including legacy publishers, podcasters, news creators, and emerging journalists building new institutions with purpose.

“These outlets are critical civic infrastructure,” Morgan said. “They are often overlooked and under‑resourced, but they remain essential.”

To address this gap, MMCA highlighted the MMCxchange, launched last October at the National Press Club. The MMCxchange is a shared content and community infrastructure designed to connect trusted publishers and creators, enable collaboration and syndication, and support messaging and mobilization at the speed of trust.

Morgan also acknowledged the partnership of Morgan State University School of Global Journalism & Communication Dean Jackie Jones, whose leadership has been instrumental in advancing the initiative.

“What has been missing is support and funding — for the MMCxchange and for the publishers who anchor this ecosystem,” Morgan said. “Media and communications infrastructure is not optional. The MMCxchange is a ready solution. What we need now is partnership — to align, adopt, and scale.”
